Rooting our cities - Focusing on the unexpected guests.

Video Gallery of the selected artworks of the Call 2023

Presented at the Botanical Garden of Palermo (Italy) on October 29th, 2023.

Jury: Gaia Squarci, Egidio Trainito, Michelangelo Gruttadauria, Rosario Schicchi, Silvia Chiodin, Sara Michieletto.

Artistsforplants has taken up the desire of many artists from all over the world to bring their contribution towards a more conscious awareness of the centrality of plants in life, both for Human beings and the Planet.

That’s why our 2023 International Call is focused on artworks dedicated to the plants living in our cities, sometimes planted by humans, sometimes spontaneously popping up in the most unexpected places as wonderful and unexpected guests, taking their right of citizenship.

The call, named “Rooting our cities - focusing on the unexpected guests“, is developed in collaborations with the Botanical Garden of the University of Palermo (Sicily, Italy).

The Garden is a two hundred years of history Museum of scientific collections of plant species, with a monumental Ficus macrophylla f. columnaris tree as a symbol.

Over the years, it has acclimatised numerous species that are now widespread in many cities, such as Ceiba speciosa, Citrus reticulata and Eriobotrya japonica.

Creatives of all backgrounds (from all arts, from writing to poetry, to filming, photography, painting, multimedia, music, theatre, digital art and more) are called upon to contribute with proposals dedicated to the plants that grow in the city: on terraces, on roofs, on walls, on pavements, in public and private spaces, those that grow spontaneously, those planted by humans, native or alien, those that unfortunately are not there...

Plants that can be present, absent, future, past, clandestine or legalized. Plants in the city.

We are used to see the skylines of our cities without the plants, but we need a new point of view that includes them, no matter if it is higher or lower, we need to try changing our perspective

We ask the artists to help us to imagine this new perspective, to see it with the eyes of art, for a future in which our cities will have roots on the soil, and branches to lead us to the sky.

Let us regain our roots: we really need to imagine a new kind of city, completely covered by plants, without any border between nature and city.

Artistsforplants is an international network of creatives of various natures and backgrounds, born out of an artistic residency in the Amazon Rainforest in 2019. In 2020, Artistsforplants in Italy made a documentary in support of plants world, with the participation of some of the greatest musicians and opera singers of the national classical world (among them Salvatore Accardo, Fiorenza Cedolins, Giovanni Sollima, Beatrice Rana and many others) and Stefano Mancuso, expert and author of many essays on plant life. The film concert has been presented at Biennale Cinema 2020 - 77 Mostra internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica (by Fondazione Ente dello spettacolo), and it can be viewed on the social channel of Artistsforplants.

In 2021, Artistsforplants launched the international call "The Art Network” to support valuable green areas considered at risk. In particular, the Italian group was focused on the Alberoni Dune in Venice - Lido, and the Colombian representatives focused their efforts on the Tropical Forest of Chocò. Artists from all over the world responded through their installations, works and creative events of any form, throughout 2021.

In 2022, Artistsforplants launched the international call “Seeds planting Art” focused on artworks dedicated to seeds—symbols of hope and renewal—linked to generative emotions and to a vision of a future in harmony, in collaboration with the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. Over the summer of 2022, we received a highly diverse range of works from many countries around the world (Argentina, Australia, Canada, Croatia, Finland, France, Germany, India, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Mexico, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Spain, Switzerland, the UK, the USA, and from a stateless person), which were then selected by a jury that included actress and writer Lella Costa, as well as a representative of the Norwegian Svalbard Global Seed Vault.

The collaboration with the Svalbard Global Seed Vault was born to create a dialogue between art, science, and economy: each of them sustaining the other, in order to pursue new models for thriving on earth.

THE BOTANICAL GARDEN OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PALERMO

The University of Palermo's Botanical Garden is one of the most important Italian academic institutions. This enormous outdoor museum can boast over 200 years of activity and is responsible for the study and diffusion of innumerable plant species in Sicily, in Europe and throughout the Mediterranean basin, many of which come from tropical and subtropical regions. Today, the Garden is particularly noteworthy for the large variety of species and the expressivity of the many floras it hosts.

The Palermo Botanical Garden dates to the late 18th century, the beginning of a historical period for the Kingdoms of Naples and Sicily characterized by numerous reforms inspired by European Enlightenment culture.

The foundation of the Royal Academy of Studies of Palermo in 1779, now the University, was an important event during this period. The Academy founded the Faculty of Natural History and Botany and received permission from the City senate to use a small piece of land near the ramparts of Porta Carini. The land was to become a Botanical Garden where "simples", i.e. medicinal plants, would be displayed and cultivated for teaching purposes.

In 1781, the Botanical Garden was located near the ramparts where the public powder keg was once kept. However, soon the allotted space became cramped and inadequate for teaching, and it was not possible to develop it any further. That's why the Garden was relocated just a few years after its foundation. The Saint Erasmus plane was chosen as the new site, in an allotment of the Gallo vineyards, owned by Duke Ignazio Vanni d'Archirafi, next to Villa Giulia, a public park founded in 1777.

Construction of the new Garden began on February 22nd, 1789. After six years, work was finished and the Garden was solemnly inaugurated in the December of 1795.

The call Seeds Planting Art is developed in collaboration with the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, which functions as safety depository for orthodox seeds, primarily of domesticated plants and their wild relatives that are important to food and agriculture.
Creatives of all backgrounds (any kind of art from writing and poetry, to filming, photography, painting, multimedia, music, theatre, digital-art and more) are called upon to contribute with proposals dedicated to all species whose seeds the Svalbard Global Seed Vault preserves, even unknown
but indispensable ones.
Artworks are to be submitted to Artistsforplants by 31 August 2022. The proposals will be selected by the organizers and will be presented in October, during Week 41.
The selected artworks will become part of a digital gallery, visible at our websites and social medias. The digital gallery will become a virtual meaningful art network to create and spread attention and need for knowledge, respect and protection for the seeds of the plants preserved at the Seed Vault.

The Art Network for Alberoni's Dunes (Venice - Italy)
Saturday, September 11, 2021

After a journey that began in January, on Saturday, September 11, we created an event dedicated to art as a way to show us the beauty and value of biodiversity. Artists from all over the world sent their works dedicated to a fragile and enchanting place: the Alberoni Dunes. September 11 was the date on which we showed the works selected from the Call, at the presence distinguished Venetian and Italian artists, who performed and installed their artworks. On this special occasion, the artists went beyond being craftsmen who, alone, create their work to become weavers of networks and relationships! All, inspired by mutual support and gratuitousness, characteristics very much present in the plant world.

A Thread For The Environment.

Installation by Monica Martin.

Conceived and realized by the artist to sensitize the community on the issue of environmental protection, the installation comprises 130 artworks suspended from a single wire, 70 meters in length. The works were created by citizens of all ages (from 4 to over 80 years), from Italy and abroad.

Presented for the first time at the Lido, Venice on September 11, 2021 in the protected area of the Alberoni dunes, for The Art Network 2021 (an initiative launched by Artists For Plants). The installation was subsequently rearranged and presented in Venice on the island of Giudecca on October 2, 2021, along the colonnade of the magnificent Cloister of the former Convent of SS. Cosma and Damiano.

With the project “A Thread for the Environment" the Venetian artist Monica Martin intends to stimulate the sensitivity of all people on the issue of environmental protection and biodiversity by linking them into a coordinated choral intervention that becomes an expression of the same.
Initially created as a "site specific work" in the dunes of Alberoni at the Lido, Venice, it is now being proposed in other contexts for other events which focus on environmental issues.

Alberoni, with its dunes still intact, represents a precious example of natural biodiversity, hosting rare wild species of flora and fauna of exceptional importance from an ecological point of view, creating a delicate balance which is unfortunately at risk.

1. The installation consists of a thread intended as an element of physical support and as a symbolic thread that unites in a single chorus, poems, drawings, musical compositions, photographs, materials collected in nature and other element and artifacts

2. The contributions of each participant, following the specific instructions of the artist, are made from biodegradable materials and all measure 30x30 cm (the square being a symbol of the earth or universe, of the ground and sky, and of justice), are hung by Monica, who acts as a unifying element (a sort of orchestral conductor), placing one next to the other along the wire, like Tibetan flags invoking a blessing or collective prayer in defence of the environment.

3. "A Thread for the Environment" expresses a limit, a line of demarcation and asks us to give due respect to the environment that hosts us and gives us life. 2. It is a thread; delicate but strong, that becomes an expression of union of purpose, of gratitude and a collective celebration of the magnificence of creation.

The response of the community to the artist's invitation has exceeded all expectations. It was the transversal response, as Monica had hoped for.
People of all ages joined in: from four years old to over 80. Friends, family members, groups of artists, guests of RSAs and members of foundations, parents with children, grandparents and their grandchildren participated in collective works; poets, painters and musicians also created ad hoc works. Contributions came from all over Italy and even abroad.

Each participant was invited by the artist to express their thoughts and produce a contribution related to the theme of environmental protection in the manner most akin to themselves, so very different contributions were collected, each with its own beauty, each with its special story and message.

Many works came to the artist by mail and it was always with renewed emotion that she opened the envelopes that arrived: from them came scents, colors, and materials evoking visions and suggestive meaning.
Many participants arrived in person, even from distant places, specifically to deliver their prayers directly into Monica's hands.

Two Venetian bookshops were then chosen by Monica as collection points, as they are places that diffuse culture and knowledge, important ingredients in the creation of awareness in every individual.

Thanks to this initiative Monica had the opportunity to have contact with many people she already knew and was able to weave new relationships via email, telephone, through social channels and of course in person. With their enthusiasm and heartfelt participation in the project, the participants in “A Thread for the Environment" conveyed to her their profound pleasure in working towards a common goal on an issue so heartfelt and more important than ever for the world.
This very strong response from the community was truly moving and is the response that for Monica gives meaning and importance of the initiative itself.

"A Thread for the Environment" is a project in progress. Currently, the thread includes 130 artworks and Monica will welcome over time more and more new prayers to join in this choir of voices so rich and precious.

Following the first exhibition of the installation, Monica has already been invited to take "a Thread for the Environment" outside Venice, both in Italy and abroad.

The artist’s hope is that soon many other "threads for the environment" will be created in other places in order to bring more and more attention to the issue of environmental protection.

The whole process of the International Call, and of Saturday's event, were realized without any sponsor or funding, but spontaneously, by the free contribution of each member of Artists For Plants and of the participating artists.
WWF's logistical support was also an important contribution.

The 20 artists of the Gabrieli Vocal Ensemble moved us with their refined execution of pieces by Donato, Gabrieli and Monteverdi, under the direction of maestro Vincenzo Piani.
Sabrina D'Errico (mezzosoprano of the Teatro Maggio Musicale, Florence) and Emilio Casali (bass of the Teatro Lirico, Cagliari), representing the CNFLS, the National Committee of Workers of the Italian Lyric Symphonic Foundations, were also singing within the Ensemble.

The works of the guest artists were then presented: Teresa Venchierutti, author of a lamp inspired by the plant Fumana procumbens, endemic in the dunes of Alberoni, and Renato Garibaldi who presented his works of topiary art, and told his story of beekeeper, in this historical moment so difficult for these precious insects.

The "Thread for the Environment" was then presented, a collective work conceived by Monica Martin, which collects the beautiful and refined works of 130 citizens who wanted to participate in the initiative.
Each flag tells extraordinary stories of ordinary people: among them children, elderly, children with Asperger's syndrome (Martin Egge Foundation onlus) and many others.

After a short walk in the enchanting, green, oasis, we moved to the WWF headquarters, where we projected the images of the 14 artists selected from the international call The Art Network 2021, and where was exhibited the work of Michele Liuzzi, artist in residence, who created a kind of bow of a ship, stretched between heaven and earth, using materials thrown by humans (pieces of a football, masks, ropes, pieces of plastic) collected in the area of Alberoni Dunes.

The selected works can also be seen here: https://www.artistsforplants.com/gallery

The director and artist Silvia Chiodin has made a video that tells about the event and the network of relationships that it has magically created.

Learning from the plant kingdom and drawing inspiration from the solutions devised by plants, we "human animals" will have the possibility to evolve towards forms of greater balance and well-being with other creatures on our Planet.

At the confluence of rivers and oceans, mangroves are at risk: "Interrupt the flows of sediments, you interrupt the services these ecosystems provide." Mangrove trees are a source of natural abundance on many levels. Protecting these ecosystems from extraction and concrete dams is key to keeping everyone safe, fed and warm.

Sabinaria Magnifica

Oil on Canvas. 36” X 48” or 91cm X 122cm.

My inspiration for this painting was the discovery of the new palm in the Darién Gap region of Chocó, Colombia. I wanted to capture and highlight the palm as it was discovered by Saúl Hoyos and Junior Echavarría in their video about the expedition that lead to its discovery.

Cultivar la Cura

4000x4000 MP4 Loop.

Cultivar la Cura was created as a homage to all women that use the power of plants as their medicine. Inspired by the flora of Chocó in Colombia and the feminine presence that is dedicated to growing the cure. Nature gives us medicine and we need to honor and protect all the people that keep and share this rich knowledge.

Passiflora

Analog collage on paper. 25 x 36 cm.

Passiflora was inspired by the beauty of passiflora flowers that grow in the Chocó region. The artwork seeks to express the subtle and deep connection that exists between the local community and the natural environment, as well as their mutual need to coexist in balance to face the challenges that progress imposes on them.

Gustavia Superba

Analog collage on paper, 24 x 34 cm.

Gustavia Superba was inspired by the homonymous flower, endemic to the Colombian Chocó. In the artwork the woman and naturemerge, representing the close relationship and co-dependency that the community has with the natural environment in which it lives. The fundamental purpose of this work is to give visibility to the fragility and beauty of the second most biodiverse area in the world; Chocó.

Mandala Blooms for Chocó are generative digital artworks inspired by the striking flora of this region.

Mandala Bloom - Ariza

Generative algorithm, 1080p x 1080p mp4 loop.

The flowers of the Brownea Ariza fall in a bundle-like form, giving it the name of "handkerchief tree". This artwork attempts to capture this form within the infinite geometry of Mandala; its motion in essence creating a meditative space to breathe in and out of.

The Golden Thread - Hildo Dorado

Ink on paper / 28.4 x 21 cm.

My art work deals with sacred power of nature, that shows us that everything is connected and interdependent. It uses as inspiration the golden thread of Aluna. Seeing the documentary, I was inspired by the golden thread (hilo dorado), which try to show all people how things in nature cannot be seen anymore separately, but as a whole, for the sake of all.

Aviaries

Pencil on paper, video and light installation.

This project is the result of research about the different bird populations of Chocó and their importance for the ecosystem of plants and palms. Based on botanical documentation I tried to get into the mindset of these birds in the Colombian jungle, in order to then be able to portray them, draw them, by listening to their sounds and ultimately imagining them in different ways. This led to the creation of a soundscapes. A reconstruction of the sounds of the jungle, where tones, frequencies and color give life to forms and light.

Interference in Tribugá Bay

Humpback Whale Acoustic Recordings from the Gulf of Tribugá (collected by Macauáticos Colombia Foundation and the PHySIC Project) - TouchDesigner / Ableton (4K / 60 FPS)

There are conversations beneath the waves of the Gulf of Tribugá and anthropogenic activity can interfere. Ships produce up to 190 db of noise at surface level and their effects on marine life have been documented. Developers have pushed a proposal for the construction of a port in Tribugá Bay, which would drastically increase ship traffic in the gulf. This piece is a spectrographic representation of the potential interference of increased ship traffic in the Gulf of Tribugá.

Breathwork with Azoteas

Reclaimed wood and pallets donated by the local pépinière (plant nursery). Peat-free locally sourced soil and organic plants - some grown from seed and some purchased.

I became inspired by the Azotea gardens after learning about them through the locals in Coqui.. After discussions about the plants grown, and uses of Azoteas in Chocó, I was motivated to recreate the movement in France, while still acknowledging it's origins. I am hoping to collaborate further by exchanging seeds, teas, and fruits of my labour in France with those in Chocó. In France, most countryside gardens have a potager (a vegetable and herb garden), these Azoteas used common edible plants in French potagers while including a couple exotic species. I hope to create a dialogue between the two cultures in which we learn from each other and expand our knowledge about the healing powers of plants internationally.
